5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs.
Artifact: School Needs Assessment
Reflection:
During Professional Learning and Tech Innovation, ITEC 7460, this artifact was completed in preparation for development of a professional learning plan for one of the schools that I support. The Needs Assessment included several steps. First, I developed a survey of eight questions relating to various technology training opportunities available to the teachers that would support their school improvement plan. I prepared the survey in Google documents and emailed the teachers an explanation and a link to the survey. After several weeks, I compiled the results, exported the information into excel, and wrote up an analysis of my findings. These results were then shared with the technology committee and administration at the school. This information was used to develop a professional learning plan for the rest of the year.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of the 5.1 standard because I conducted a needs assessment to determine faculty strengths and weaknesses in regards to the content and delivery of a technology-based learning program for the coming year. I was surprised to learn that the majority of the teachers wanted to learn more about the Pearson SuccessNet online resource. This resource was purchased with our language arts textbook adoption and training had originally been offered through the district curriculum department. Many teachers had not taken advantage of this training when it was offered. I also learned through this project how to create a survey in Google docs. Next time, I would take the results from the survey and narrow the choices even further from what they chose and put the narrowed choices in a new survey. I felt there were too many choices in this one survey. Faculty development will initially be impacted the most from this needs assessment. During the course of the year, teachers will be participating in technology training that they chose through the survey, rather than it being chosen for them. This impact can be assessed through projects teachers will be creating to utilize with their students. Student learning will then be impacted from what the teachers have learned through their professional learning.
