Artifact: Collaborative Group Website ISTE Lesson Plan
Reflection:
This artifact was created in ITEC 7430, Internet Tools in the Classroom. The purpose of the lesson plan was to use research based technologies to support the diverse needs of all students. The lesson plan was used as a follow-up to units taught on the five science standards covered throughout the year in 3rd grade. The students worked in groups to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts and worked collaboratively with their group to create a Weebly website. Students also used online subscription resources for their research of their group topic. Each member of the group contributed and had a responsibility for the group project. This project supports mastery of this standard because I was providing indirect instruction as the instructional strategy and the students were collaborating with their groups. The closing event of the project was presenting their website with the rest of the class and the other two 3rd grade classes.
While completing this project, I was reminded how fortunate we are in our district to have laptops available for young students. These students had been using these laptops all year, so they were very comfortable utilizing them. They also had worked collaboratively in groups for other projects. Improvement of this project might involve completing the Weebly websites for each science unit throughout the year rather than waiting till the end of the year for all the units. Then, students could go back and add more information as they find it. Next time, I would also have students create a rubric for the project and evaluate each group's website according to that rubric. Completion of this lesson plan allowed the classroom teacher to see exactly what her students had learned in science throughout the year. It also allowed the students to collaborate with others in their groups and share with other 3rd grade students and their parents. Students were assessed using a teacher created rubric to show mastery of the standards their unit website included.
